Chimney Crown Repair

December 23, 2025 Ghent
Problem

The existing chimney crown and surrounding mortar were deteriorated and showing signs of spalling and water intrusion, and the flue openings were unprotected which allowed potential animal entry and sparks. Flashing sealant at the chimney base was failing and brick joints required pointing to prevent further moisture damage.

Solution

Removed loose mortar and cleaned the chimney crown area, then applied a new parge/concrete crown over the clay flue liners and re-pointed damaged mortar joints. Installed a new black metal chimney cap with integrated mesh bird guard/spark arrestor, fastened it around the perimeter, and resealed the roof flashing; we also set a black metal fireplace insert flush into the masonry opening and verified electrical connection and fit.

The repaired crown, new cap, and resealed flashing restore a watertight condition and prevent animal entry and spark escape; the fireplace insert is cleanly installed and ready for use. Customer now has a durable, professional finish that reduces future maintenance and leak risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from Norfolk

What should I expect to pay for a standard chimney sweeping and inspection in Norfolk, VA, and are there any local factors that affect the price? LOCAL

+

That's a great question. For a standard Level 1 visual inspection and chimney sweep in the Norfolk and greater Hampton Roads area, you can typically expect to pay between $199 and $350. This covers the basic service for a single flue. Here in our coastal Virginia climate, the high humidity can sometimes accelerate creosote buildup and increase the risk of moisture damage, making that annual inspection particularly important. The price can be influenced by the age and style of your home—servicing a historic chimney in Ghent might have different requirements than a newer home. Additional costs could arise if we discover an animal nest, which isn't uncommon near the waterways, or if your system requires a more intensive Level 2 inspection, which is often recommended by Virginia real estate agents during a home sale. We always provide a firm quote before starting any work.

With Norfolk's humid, coastal climate, how often should I really have my chimney inspected and swept? LOCAL

+

That's a great question specific to our Hampton Roads weather! While the national recommendation is an annual inspection, Norfolk's high humidity and salty air can be tougher on your chimney system. This moisture can accelerate the breakdown of masonry and flue liners, and it can also cause creosote to become 'glazier' and harder to remove. For those who use their wood-burning fireplace regularly during our mild but damp winters, we strongly suggest a cleaning and inspection every year without fail. For more occasional users, an annual inspection is still crucial to catch any moisture-related damage or blockages from nesting animals seeking shelter from nor'easters. Think of it as essential annual maintenance to keep your historic or modern Norfolk home safe and warm. We can assess your specific usage and chimney condition to give you a more personalized recommendation.

Living in Norfolk, with our humid summers and potential for hurricanes, what's the best time of year to schedule my chimney cleaning and inspection? LOCAL

+

That's a great question that's very specific to our Hampton Roads climate. We strongly recommend scheduling your annual chimney service during the spring or early summer, typically from April to July. This is our off-season, so you'll find much more flexible appointment times compared to the fall rush. More importantly, getting your chimney swept after the burning season removes corrosive soot and creosote before our humid summer air can mix with it, which helps prevent premature damage to your chimney's interior. It also ensures your chimney cap and structure are secure well before the peak of hurricane season arrives in late summer and early fall. Waiting until September or October means you'll be competing for a spot with everyone else who just remembered the first cold snap is coming. By booking in the spring, you can relax knowing your fireplace is clean, safe, and ready to go.

Living in Norfolk, I'm worried about hurricane season. What specific safety precautions should I take for my chimney before a storm hits? LOCAL

+

That's a very smart question to ask here in the Hampton Roads area. The high winds and torrential rain from hurricanes and nor'easters pose a real threat to your chimney system. Before the season gets active, we strongly recommend a professional inspection focusing on a few key areas. First, ensure you have a securely fastened, high-quality chimney cap. This is your primary defense against wind-driven rain and flying debris entering your flue. We also meticulously check the metal flashing around the base of your chimney, as this is a common failure point for major leaks during a storm. Finally, we examine the brick and mortar for any cracks or deterioration that could be compromised by severe winds. Addressing these vulnerabilities proactively not only protects your chimney but prevents costly water damage to your home, giving you crucial peace of mind when a storm is on its way.

Are there any specific regulations in Norfolk, VA I need to know about before installing a new wood stove or fireplace insert? LOCAL

+

That's a great question and an important one for safety. In Norfolk, any new installation of a heating appliance like a wood stove or fireplace insert falls under the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC) and the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code (VSFPC). This means that a building permit from the City of Norfolk is almost always required before work begins, especially if you're installing a new chimney or venting system. The key is ensuring the appliance is installed exactly to the manufacturer's specifications and meets all clearance requirements to combustible materials. While Virginia doesn't mandate a specific license for chimney sweeps, using a CSIA-certified professional is your best bet. They will be up-to-date on all state and local codes, can help you navigate the Norfolk permitting process, and ensure your installation is done safely, which is especially important given our coastal climate's effect on masonry and metal components.
